5 Tracks for Back to School

If September means back-to-school for you as it does for us here in Eastern Canada, you’re gonna new some playlist additions. And even if you’re not back to school, some great new indie tracks never hurt! Here are five indie rock, punk and pop tracks for the upcoming week, some quite new, and a few a little older. Check them out via the Bandcamp links below or head over to the 2021-a-Day Spotify playlist to check them out as part of over 10 hours of awesome indie music.

Garage Punk from Bristol, UK

Bristol 5-piece Cosmit play a “High octane, scrappy brand of garage punk inspired by Northern Soul, Motown and 1960’s pop groups”. (Bandcamp) This one actually came out in the Spring of 2020, but it’s new to me and maybe new to you too. One of 3 tracks on a 7 inch single. The single is now sold out but you can buy the tracks from their bandcamp page.

Goth Pop from Detroit, Michigan

Another 2020 release, but also another one worth looping back to. Chloë Drallos has been recording as Zilched since 2017. This track is from the debut full-length DOOMPOP released on Young Heavy Souls records and described as “inspired by a reflection on the albums that helped Zilched navigate her teen years like Nirvana’s Nevermind or The Jesus and Mary Chain’s Psychocandy.” (Bandcamp)

Garage Punk from LA

I’m a librarian in my non-music-blogging life, and you can only imagine the number of people who emailed me a link to the Linda Linda’s now-viral performance at the LA Public Library’s TEENtastic Tuesdays Asian Pacific Heritage Month Kick-Off. The four-piece of young women all under 18 have sort of taken the indie world by storm since. This track is a new single, released in July 2021.

Ecuadorian Post-Punk

I actually don’t know how I came across this track from duo Nika Turbina. With limited English-language info available on them (and with my limited Spanish) I can’t tell you much about them other than that they have connections to both Argentina and Ecuador. This track was written by band-mates Taly Salas & Roxana Landívar and released in April 2021. Synths and spoken word in a post-punk style: keep an eye for more from this duo.

Bedroom Pop from Atlanta, Georgia

Mallbangs is Josh Smith and this track Well (x3) comes from their first EP Put Me Out, which was released in July. Performed largely by Smith, this is melancholic but catchy pop with a nice mix of guitar and synths.
