Although I was certain when I started this blog that I didn’t just want to focus on Canadian music, I’m surprised that I’ve made it this far into the year with so few bands from my own city represented. We kicked off the year and the blog with excellent Inner Space from hometown heroes Dog Day, but we haven’t featured other Halifax band since. We fix that today with Sway from Halifax/Dartmouth’s Safeword.
Safeword are Greg Baller on bass, Brian Foster on drums, Daniel Watt on guitar and Karen Foster on vocals and keys. They formed as a 3-piece late in 2019, adding their fourth member in early 2020 and clocking a single practice before the pandemic began shutting things down. With Nova Scotia’s fortunate low COVID numbers over the summer, they were able to regroup; solidifying a few tracks for recording at Ocean Floor studios.
Sway is the first of the singles they released. A tight rocker that clocks in at just 2:32, Sway bounces out of the gate with a crisp drum intro, followed by spare guitar and bass that allow Foster’s confident vocals to take centre stage. One would imagine this as a band that had honed its sound across numerous stages, but in truth Safeword has yet to play live due to the pandemic. There are many reasons to hope that 2021 will remedy that. A full length is currently in the works, with a hoped release for 2021. Give them a listen and a follow now so you’re ready when it drops.
