2021 seems like it’s shaping up to be a big year for Toronto by way of PEI’s Kiwi Jr. Their second album Cooler Returns is released later this month on Sub Pop Records. The lead single of the same name was released in November.
The band’s previous Mint Records release Football Money was already a Canadian College radio fave in 2019. This time last year, Pitchfork featured the record and said “with easy hooks, surprise structural twists, and a gift for non-sequiturs, the Canadian quartet’s debut is a vivid portrait of the big-city struggle. Pavement’s influence is impossible to ignore”.
The songs are catchy for sure, but the band also has a fun sense of style that is hard to ignore in these less-than-fun times. Case in point, the delightful video for Leslie the first single off of Football Money.
January can be dark days, let this one brighten things up a bit.
